New Study Reveals 142 Million Americans Went Boating in 2016

An estimated 142 million Americans (adults and children under the age of 18) went boating in 2016 – 36 percent of U.S. households – according to the 2016 Recreational Boating Participation Study, released today by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA)Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) and Discover Boating. Of the 142 million individuals, 17 million individuals were first-time participants, and half of these first-time participants were children under age 18. Of those Americans who went boating in 2016, those who spent the most hours on the water or engaged in fishing and water sports were more likely to consider purchasing a boat.

“The results of the new Recreational Boating Participation Study illustrate the breadth of recreational boating in the United States and the opportunity for our industry to get more Americans on the water and ultimately buying boats – exploring emerging markets such as Hispanics, reaching younger boaters, and encouraging those already active in boating to pursue boat ownership,” said Thom Dammrich, NMMA President. “The study makes clear what we all know as boaters—the more time spent on the water, the more likely someone is to become a boat owner. As an industry, it is our job to help people spend more time on the water and facilitate the boating and boat-buying process—whether that’s through lobbying for improved access and infrastructure, nurturing active boaters through marketing, or providing more accessible ways to try boating through such things as classes or rental opportunities.”

“The insights from this report support a healthy, and thriving participation level for boating, which helps fund local conservation programs across the U.S.,” said RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson. “As we strive to increase participation in both recreational boating and fishing, the report also gives us a deeper look at the connection between the two activities, reinforcing a need for early introduction. This information will help us grow the sport, creating more customers for the industry, more fishing license and boat registration purchases and increased tackle and equipment sales.”

Prepared by QSA Research & Analytics, the study assessed the total number of boaters in the U.S., including those active during 2016 and those who went boating for the first time during 2016, as well as those who have never gone boating. The study also profiled both active boaters and first-time boaters according to their demographic characteristics, and measured the number of household participants who were active boaters and first-time boaters during 2016, their ages, and genders. Other topics featured in the study include boat ownership participation, the amount of time that active boaters spent boating during 2016, and the activities they engaged in while boating, including fishing and watersports.

Hard Times for US Watercraft

July 25, 2017

We hoped it wasn't true, but the improvement of the new retail North American sailboat market continues it's sluggish improvement.  Faced with a surge of European brands due to the price of the EURO, it has been a tough go as of late for American Sailboat Manufacturers.  The industry claimed is latest victim as US Watercraft of Portsmouth, RI filed for receivership on July 18 of this month.   Despite the excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail of the Alerion, True North, C&C and North Rip brands- the manufacturer that grown by leaps and bounds in the past five years closed its doors as a trustee was appointed by the courts to mitigate the almost $7M in secured debt that the company held on its books.

We are Karma Yacht Sales, really believed in the brand and as of today have not received official word from USWC, but we're hopeful that the lines will be acquired by a new manufacturer.  From what we hear, there has already been some interest- we shall see what the future brings.

SAILING Magazine highlights Businessman Louis Sandoval for his efforts in expanding the sport of Sailing.

July 11, 2017

Karma Yacht Sales Founder Lou Sandoval is featured in the "Sailors Among Us" section of the July/Aug 17 issue of SAILING MAGAZINE.  The feature, written by Heather Steinberger  highlights Mr. Sandoval's circuitous journey into the Marine Industry and his quest to extend the pathway for a new generation of sailors. Steinberger taps into the tenacity and perseverance that is characteristic of competitors such as Mr. Sandoval and how it defines their outlook on life.

"Sailors Among Us: A circuitous route to the Sailing Life "

Originally published in SAILING Magazine, copyright 2017. www.sailingmagazine.net

A circuitous route to the sailing life

This Chicago man didn’t grow up sailing, but it became a passion he’s passing on to his family

Like a sailboat, life never moves in a straight line from the starting line to the finish. It also has a tendency to blast you with roaring winds, strange currents  and  a  startling  array  of unexpected circumstances, which means you’ll learn a heck of a lot along the way— and very likely emerge stronger and wiser than before.

No one understands that better than Lou Sandoval, whose love of sailing has taken his life in directions he never expected and forms the backbone of everything from his profession to his family life.

Sandoval didn’t grow up in a sailing family. Far from it. His paternal grandparents were migrant workers; they regularly trav- eled from their farm in Mexico to farms in the United States that needed help. As a result, Sandoval’s father and his seven brothers and sisters were born in communities across North America.

“My father was born near Minnetonka, Minnesota,” he says. “After his parents died, he came to live in Chicago with his oldest brother, and he got a job in the steel mills at age 18.”

The elder Sandoval worked in the mills for more than 40 years, providing a solid working-class upbringing for his own four children, who he and his wife enrolled in private Catholic schools.

“They made sure we got a good education,” Sandoval says. “It was a good foundation for all of us, and we grew up with strong family values.”

The first in many twists of fate came in the form of the Cub Scouts. A friend invited an 8-year-old Sandoval to attend a meeting, and he was intrigued by what he discovered. “They did so many fun outdoor things, like camping and hiking,” he recalls. “When I was 10, I went to a scouts’ summer camp in Michigan, near Muskegon. That’s where I started sailing. I earned a merit badge sailing Sunfish.”

Sandoval’s childhood experiences at the Owasippe Scout Reservation’s Big Blue Lake shed entirely new light on his home. Although it sat in the shadow of the steel mills on Chicago’s South Side, it was just two blocks from Lake Michigan.

“So many Chicago kids live near the lake, yet they never go there,” he muses. “That’s a challenge for our city, because the water can give young people so many opportunities.”

Alerion Yachts Announces New Carbon Spar Supplier

WARREN, RI (March 16, 2017) - USWatercraft is pleased to announce that Offshore Spars is the new supplier of carbon-fiber spars for its Alerion Yachts line of luxury performance sailboats.

Five Alerion models feature a carbon mast as standard equipment: the Alerion 41, Alerion 38, Alerion 33, Alerion Sport 33, and Alerion Sport 30. Offshore Spars will also supply the aluminum booms for these models. USWatercraft builds the full line of Alerion Yachts in its Rhode Island factory, utilizing its signature resin-infusion molding process.

"A high-performance carbon spar is integral to the sailing performance and ease of handling of the larger Alerion Yachts," says Randy Borges, President and CEO of USWatercraft. "The strength and specific build characteristics of a carbon spar allow us to eliminate the backstay, which is perfectly in line with the Alerion mission of simplifying boathandling. And a carbon spar guarantees strength while reducing weight aloft. It's the perfect complement to our lightweight yet strong hulls; this combination is key to the boats' superior performance in all sea and wind conditions. We look forward to a strong partnership with the team at Offshore Spars, who are known for the high quality of their spars," says Borges.

"As a manufacturer of high-performance carbon spars, we are extremely pleased to be the supplier for Alerion Yachts. The reputation of the Alerion line and Offshore Spars' high build quality will complement each other perfectly," says Steven King, President of Offshore Spars.

Offshore Spars is located outside of Detroit, MI, and is renowned for producing single-piece autoclave-cured carbon-fiber spars over male tooling. In business since 1976, Offshore Spars has more than 25 years of experience building carbon spars for everything from dinghies to super yachts, for customers around the globe.

Four Alerion Yachts with Offshore Spars - three Alerion 33s and one Alerion 41 - will launch this spring.

Industry Leaders Rally Around America's Cup Endeavour Initiative

April 13, 2016

The America's Cup announced today that the Endeavor Initiative was going to be extended to the United States.  The "Endeavour" initiative" is America’s Cup youth education and community sailing program that enables students in New York City to learn through a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Education curriculum and to then put those learnings into practice on the water in the AC Endeavour boats.  The program is also being extended to Chicago for the June stop of the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series June 10-12

The Endeavor program is a youth initiative that provides eight Hobie Wave catamarans (rendering attached) that will be donated to local youth sailing programs, along with legacy funding to help run the programs going forward.

The Chicago Endeavour initiative will kick off with a fundraiser on April 27th at the Shedd Aquarium.  Karma Yacht Sales, Lou Sandoval joins many other industry leaders on the steering committee to help kick this program off in the Windy City.

"Chicago's kids deserve this opportunity, I'm looking forward to seeing this program grow in the city of big shoulders" said Sandoval "Chicago's lakefront is one of her best unkept secrets-every youth should be afforded the opportunity to experience it and this program is right for that."

Mr. Sandoval will join other marine industry leaders on the inaugural steering committee to seed this new community sailing initiative.  We encourage all of Chicago's boaters to support this program.  For more information on the kick off event visit AC Endeavour Chicago via the link or graphic below.

NYYC to host C&C 30 One Design North American Championship

March 21, 2016

The C&C 30 One Design class is proud to announce that its inaugural North American Championship will be held this summer as part of New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex. The regatta takes place July 13-16, in Newport, RI.

The class has grown steadily since one-design racing began in 2015; 11 teams recently competed at the 2016 edition of Quantum Key West Race Week. With the rapid introduction of new teams, and with boats in build for early 2016 delivery, the fleet is expected to number at least 20 for the July event.

“The class is honored to hold our first North Americans at the NYYC,” says C&C 30 One Design Class President Dan Cheresh. “The conditions in Newport are always spectacular, and the NYYC logistics and hospitality are top-shelf. I’m thrilled to be competing in such an exciting event; we’ll be training hard all summer. The competition gets tighter at every regatta – I can’t wait to get to the starting line.”

Cheresh and his team on Extreme2 won the class’ first stand-alone event, the Miami Ocean Series hosted by Coconut Grove Sailing Club, in February. The win came on the heels of a hard-fought Quantum Key West Race Week, whereExtreme2 finished second to Walt Thirion and his team on ThemisExtreme2 andThemis traded wins throughout 2015, but always in the mix were Jim Madden and his team on Stark Raving Mad, Ed Feo and Loco, Angus Davis and Nyabinghi, and Bob Moran and Bobsled. New owners for 2016 who are sure to shake up the overall standings include Kip Meadows with a new roXanne,  Mark Bremer withCity Girl, and Steve Stroub aboard Tiburon.

“The C&C 30 One Design fleet is growing fast,” says Randy Borges, president of USWatercraft. “With new boats joining the fleets in California, the Great Lakes, Annapolis and Newport, the competition is heating up.  The one-design racing is ultra-competitive, thanks to clear rules and measurement oversight by the class measurer and the team at USWatercraft. This ensures an even playing field, which resonates with owners who want to drive their own boats and who insist on a high-performance platform.”

The North American Championship Trophy will be presented at the Rolex Awards Gala at the New York Yacht Club.

The C&C 30 One Design is designed by Mark Mills and the USWatercraft engineering team, and is built in the USA by USWatercraft. A full schedule of events is planned for 2016 and can be found on the new class websitecc30class.com.

Adventures of the C&C 30 OD Fleet- Issue 1: Key West Race Week 2016

February 2, 2016

2016 promises to pick up right where 2015 left off with this exciting new One-Design class.  The active eleven boat fleet made its way down to sunny (and windy) Key West Florida January 18-22 for a wet and wild time.

The eleven boat fleet brought owners from as far away as California, the Northeast and the Midwest.   Class president Dan Cheresh and the Extreme 2 team represented the Great Lakes and reported back that the fleet experience and competition in the class was 'top notch'.

The KWRW CC30OD section was won by Walt Theiron's 'THEMIS" hailing from Eastport YC in Annapolis, MD.   Dan Cheresh and "EXTREME 2" came in a close 2nd (2 points) and not too far behind was Edwin Feo's "LOCO"  from Alamitos Bay YC in Long Beach, CA.

Stay tuned as the fleet keeps the pressure up in the 'Southern Circuit' with appearances in the Conch Republic Race to Cuba and the Miami Ocean Challenge.   One of the most flexible features of the C&C 30 is that you get Grand Prix performance packed into a 30' rocketship that you can unrig, put on a trailer and haul to the next event. The 'unsung feature' though is the offshore flexibility of the "30".  She is particularly suitable for Lake Michigan sailors as you can race around the bouys and go race offshore racing.   We look forward to seeing the results of the design in some of our popular distance races like the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac or the Queen's Cup.

New Year, New Philosophy, New Opportunities

Dear Karma Yacht Sales Customers and Friends:

2016 marked the start of the 14th year of Karma Yacht Sales’ representation as the Beneteau dealer for Lake Michigan.   Throughout the past 13 years we have forged many great relationships with our customers, and many of them have become friends.   One of our proudest accomplishments is the community of Beneteau owners that we have built here on Lake Michigan.  We have helped hundreds of people navigate the happy (and sometimes sad) moments of their journeys through boat ownership.

Our entire business philosophy was built on the ‘belief that waves of good fortune follow admirable actions’ (literally, karma).  This statement was always our guiding principle.  From the beginning, we saw an opportunity that existed to offer quality products and superior customer service while focusing on the building of long-term relationships rather than quick, ‘one-time wins’.   We have always worked as our customers’ advocate, and for many years we received great support from the customer support team at Beneteau - led by Ward Richardson, Mike Watson, Todd Cranford and Debbie Thomas.  We also have borne significant out-of-pocket costs over the years, as it was necessary to do this to ensure that our customers’ needs were met.  Putting their needs first was always our primary goal.

Our rise from #43 to the top five in Beneteau Customer Service Satisfaction (in our first two years) is a legacy that we are very proud of.  We achieved many years of great success, and we also built the largest First 36.7 fleet in the world on Lake Michigan (with 37 boats overall).  We reached much of this success because we had a great partnership with our manufacturer.  This relationship, like the ones with our customers, was forged on trust and collaboration and there was always a willingness to listen.   KYS’ involvement in Beneteau’s Dealer Council (a product/operations advisory group) was an integral part of the process that shaped many of the models that became great successes in the American market.  This collaborative environment helped us achieve the near 100% growth we experienced during our first 9 years.

The industry dynamics have changed quite a bit; in part due to the recession but more importantly by cultural shifts in the leadership at Beneteau.  Manufacturer-dealer relationships are more autocratic and there is very little collaboration. Product introductions overwhelmingly emphasize very large boats, and are becoming mostly power-boat models.  While this may be a necessary global strategy for Groupe Beneteau, the end result is that the reasonably-priced, innovative sailboat models have become nearly extinct.  These models helped Karma Yacht Sales keep Beneteau as the #1 brand on Lake Michigan for 12 years.

We disagree whole-heartedly with this current philosophy, especially when considering the aging demographic in boating and the fact that many Midwestern states that border Lake Michigan have been slow to recover from the depths of the recession.  There remains an adverse banking/lending environment, and state and local taxes continue to rise, which demands more and more from the average customer.  All these factors have lessened the desire for products that require a high ‘cost-of-entry’ to get into the boating lifestyle.

It is for these reasons that we have made the decision to stop representing Beneteau as their  Lake Michigan Dealer, effective January 6, 2016.

We are currently evaluating several opportunities that have presented themselves to us, and will be determining our next steps over the next few months.  We are excited about the new opportunities that exist on the horizon.

A fleet of Beneteau First 40.7 used in competition for the China Cup

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ANNAPOLIS, Md., November 12, 2015 – Beneteau America has returned from its first participation in the 9th China Cup International Regatta, which was held in Daya Bay, Shenzhen from October 30th to November 2nd. It is the first Chinese event to be listed on the "International Sailing Federation calendar", and also the largest one-design regatta in Asia. Every year, the event gathers over 100 crews from more than 30 countries.

Team Beneteau America was comprised of Beneteau dealers and staff members, including the President of Beneteau America, Laurent Fabre, and the company’s Sales Manager for sailboats as skipper, Chris Doscher. Participating dealers were Thomas Span from SMA Yachts, Rick Day from South Coast Yachts and Charles Devanneaux from NAOS Yachts.

Team Beneteau America ranked 9th in a field of 25 competitive teams within the Beneteau First 40.7 class. Wanhang Longcheer skippered by Steve Mconohey won the class, edging out Emirates Team New Zealand by only a few points.

“While all teams naturally prefer being on the podium, this event was still a great success for Beneteau”, said Beneteau America’s Chris Doscher. “We rewarded some of our top dealers with an extraordinary experience, and have laid the groundwork for other Beneteau teams to come back here and compete. The race was also a great success for the race organizers. The Chinese authorities really put on a good event. I am sure it will continue to grow as more sailors learn how exciting, competitive and welcoming China is to racing sailors from around the world” commented Doscher.

This past weekend's conditions in Chesapeake Bay greeted the C&C 30 OD fleet with an assortment of conditions.  The fleet had an impressive showing with nine boats which travelled to Annapolis, MD for the 2015 edition of the Storm Trysail Club’s Annapolis Fall Regatta (Oct 23-25).  The boats came from the East and West Coasts and the Midwest to a tight competitive showing.

At the end of three days of varied conditions, Midwest Sailor and C&C Owner Dan Cheresh (Saugatauk, MI) and his boat EXTREME 2 were victorious with an almost perfect weekend finishing just 6.5 points ahead of the second place boat.

Mr. Cheresh, who is the first C&C 30 OD owner on Lake Michigan is a consumate fan of the Mark Mills design rocketship. "Thanks to our friends and the C&C Dealer in the Midwest-Karma Yacht Sales. We would love to see a couple more boats sailing in the fresh water of Lake Huron, Lake Michigan or Lake Erie" said Cheresh.

Beneteau America Receives 2015 Marine Industry CSI Award

Beneteau America was honored with the 2015 Marine Industry Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) Award in the Sailboats category to acknowledge its efforts and excellence in customer satisfaction.

The announcement occurred during the annual Industry Breakfast at the 2015 International Boatbuilders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) in Louisville, KY. This year, the Marine Industry CSI Awards honored 45 manufacturers that actively measured customer satisfaction and pursued continuous improvement to better serve the customer.

“Customer satisfaction is so much more than providing an outstanding product. It’s about delivering an exceptional experience during the sale and beyond,” notes Robert Newsome, vice president of engineering standards for NMMA. “We congratulate these 45 manufacturers for their commitment to promoting a positive boat ownership experience.”

Beneteau achieved and maintained an independently-measured standard of excellence of 94% in customer satisfaction over the past year, based on information provided by customers who purchased a new sailboat during the period April 1, 2014 - March 31, 2015.

“As a leader on the sailboat market in North America, Beneteau’s top priority is to cultivate an exceptional ownership experience and to keep raising the bar on customer satisfaction,” noted Laurent Fabre, President of Beneteau America. “We want to share this recognition with our Beneteau dealerships and congratulate them for their endless commitment to improving customer experience and service.”
