More First Than Ever: The First 45 to Premiere in the U.S.

Marion, SC, April 9, 2008:

Launched in 2006, the First 50 set a new benchmark for the First range. The many awards received worldwide since its launch, reflect its huge success. That momentum now continues with the launch of the First 45. The First 45 made its world premiere at the Paris Boat Show in December and will now make its American debut at Strictly Sail Pacific taking place from Apr. 16-20th in Oakland. Its purity of line, now-famous attributes (“eye-lid” cabin brow and flush hatches), sleek, aggressive profile, hull balance when heeled and high-precision 2-wheel helm all give this 45-footer the qualities so admired in its big sister.

This new First is designed for lovers of fast, comfortable cruising, with attributes that include a spacious, highly-functional and welcoming interior crafted from contemporary cabinetry, upholstery and material finishes (a combination of light oak, contrasting deep tones, leather and stainless steel), uncluttered deck plan, multiplicity of stowage lockers and uninterrupted forward vision.

Designed in close cooperation between Beneteau and Philippe Briand Yacht Design, the First 45 is offered with extensive cruising equipment as standard. In the Sport version, the key words are Seduction and Comfort, while a Regatta version is focused on performance for a program geared more toward racing. There’s a choice of keel (shallow-draft cast iron as standard and lead deep-draft in option) for all versions, to suit everyone’s needs and all geographical areas.

The First 45 participated in its first races at La Trinite Sur Mer in February immediately following its launch straight from the factory. “Lady Courier” was delivered from Lorient to La Trinite the day before the start of the Spring regattas.

Philippe Briand the designer had this feedback after the two races. “I have been impressed by the performances and the potential, especially upwind. We started the 2 races at the pin end to the lee of the fleet, and after a few minutes we were leading, having crossed all the fleet. We rounded the weather mark first in both two races. The helm is smooth, precise, and the boat accelerates on each puff, heeling slightly to make the aft chine skimming the water’s surface.”

Gery Trentesaux, the Skipper and previous owner of a First 44.7 said. “Compared with my previous First 44.7, I have been impressed during this first sailing.

  • Build quality looked great
  • I did like the comfort and new interior design, although I am pretty conservative!
  • The cockpit layout is more efficient for the crew work
  • The upwind performances are impressive in this wind range, despite non overlapping head sails.

Combining comfort and design for cruising with higher performance for racing, there’s little doubt that the FIRST 45 will be even more FIRST than ever!

New Alerion Express Promises to Make a Splash

Cruising World - General
By Mark Pillsbury at 2008-03-31

Call it a daysailer that you can enjoy well into the evening, or longer. Pearson Composites of Warren, Rhode Island, is wrapping up the design of the latest in its line of Alerion Express sailboats and will begin tooling for a 45-footer in the next six weeks, says Pearson's Scott Bryant.

Due for a Spring 2009 launch, preliminary drawings suggest the new 45 will carry the stately lines and powerful sail plan that make her smaller siblings, the 33 and the 38, standouts on the waterfront. This includes a 7/8ths carbon-fiber, two-spreader rig; a North 3DL full-batten mainsail with lots of roach; and a non-overlapping 3DL jib set on a carbon-fiber Hoyt jib-boom.

The forthcoming Alerion Express 45 will feature an extra large cockpit, full-batten mainsail, and carbon-fiber jib-boom.

But the additional waterline and size of the hull means the 45 will be the first in the Alerion line to have standing headroom, and along with it, overnight accommodations that include fore and aft cabins, both with double berths, and long settees in the saloon that can serve, when needed, as bunks for additional crew.

According to the designer notes compiled by Clive Dent, the interior will be fitted out in the owner's choice of raised panel cherry or teak, or a combination of wood and white painted bulkheads. The galley, to starboard of the companionway, will include stove, fridge, and a deep stainless sink; opposite, the head has a separate, circular, enclosed shower. There's a fixed, drop-leaf table between the settees in the saloon, and farther forward are folding doors, that when closed, give the V-berth privacy, but when open, are intended to give the interior a sense of airy spaciousness.

The Alerions have all been designed around a large cockpit that lets guests lounge comfortably, while the helmsman has all the controls at hand for the enjoyable job of sailing. On the 45, that task will be made easier with a pair of Lewmar 54 self-tailing electric winches.

Forward, the 45 will sport an anchor roller that folds back in to a locker that also houses a windlass. This sort of arrangement has proven popular with other designers recently because it keeps the foredeck clear and doesn't detract from the boat's looks. On the stern, the drawings depict panels just aft of the mainsheet traveler that fold up to reveal two steps that lead down to a cool looking fold-down swim-platform transom that will also make boarding from a dinghy easier.

And when the breeze fades away entirely, there'll be a 75-horsepower Yanmar and saildrive to get captain and crew safely back to port.

The Alerion Express 33 and 38 have made good of their promise to be easy on the eyes and a lot of fun to sail. I'd expect the 45 will too, while also providing an owner with a comfortable place to enjoy that good night sleep he's earned after a day on the water.

Beneteau 31 Premiers at Strictly Sail Chicago

Marion, SC, January 30, 2008

The newest member of the Beneteau line proves that elegance and style are not restricted to its bigger siblings.

As the entry-level boat, the Beneteau 31 embodies the same philosophy as the other members of the Beneteau line: to create a family cruiser par excellence - beautiful to look at, comfortable to live aboard and seaworthy. "The second in this latest range of premiering models also combines elegance with ingenuity for comfortable cruising with friends and family or easy single handing," Beneteau USA President Wayne Burdick said. "She combines functionality with great visual appeal and real pizzazz in a size of boat where design panache often comes in a poor second to function." The 31 cruising yacht follows the striking Groupe Finot lines and the high style of Nauta Design of the recently unveiled Beneteau 37 to a new scale. With its sharp profile and sleek coachroof, the 31 also incorporates innovative features like the patented companionway hatch and extremely practical cockpit lift-opening locker that is unique to her size. The designers of the 31 focused on ensuring that comfort was not sacrificed for function and style.

The cockpit allows freedom of movement around the wheel and has a spacious transom skirt and its unique lifting locker. Beneteau’s patented companionway system, with its foldable, sliding hatch, leads to an impressive cabin that will become the high bar in design excellence for boat builders.

The new design gives priority to the shared areas of the boat. To create a spacious, ergonomically-designed cockpit, generous salon and the largest galley in its category. A great deal of detail has gone into the design of the interior to create maximum space with abundant natural light. "The challenge was to create the maximum living space, so on this boat you’ll see a galley that is probably the best in its class, with paired stainless steel sinks area arranged lengthwise to provide the greatest work surface." Burdick said. "The very comfortable salon emphasizes space and light, making use of two hull side ports as well as coachroof ports to create a bright, airy feel."

"The Beneteau 31 will be built in Marion<, SC," Burdick said. "She will be is offered in a two-cabin layout with a large head/shower compartment and grand salon." Geoff McCord, Beneteau regional sales manager, said the Beneteau 31 impressed him during its unveiling at the Paris International Boat Show in December. This was a pleasant surprise; the boat has a roomy feel below and in the cockpit," he said. " The outside styling--carried down from the 37--really looks stunning. Like the new 37, the new 31 will look great in the water and perform under sail." The Beneteau 31 will make its North American premier at the Strictly Sail Chicago Boat Show running from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3.

Beneteau 40 Wins Boat of the Year "Best Midsize Cruiser"

MARION, SC, December 17, 2007:

The Beneteau 40 was awarded Boat of the Year by Cruising World Magazine for Best Midsize Cruiser. Cruising World magazine announced the best in boatbuilding for 2008 with its 15th annual Boat of the Year Awards. The results will be featured in Cruising World’s January 2008 issue.

In October, the judges nominated 24 boats in six categories: small cruisers, midsize cruisers, multihulls, midsize luxury cruisers, full-size cruisers and a unlimited cruisers category called, "Nothing quite like it." The judges included Steve Callahan, boat designer, Stacey Collins, a lifelong cruiser and veteran judge in the Boat of the Year Awards; Tom Linskey, former racer, sail maker and magazine editor; and Ralph Naranjo, former boatyard manager, technical editor and author. The judges toured the boats at the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, and sailed them on Chesapeake Bay over four days.

In the category of midsize cruisers, the competition included the Dufour 425, Grand Soleil 40, Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42i, Sabre Spirit and the Beneteau 40.

"Comfortable and stylish belowdecks and well organized topside, the Beneteau 40 showed light-air performance on the waters off Annapolis last fall that hinted at good handling in a stiffer breeze, and convinced the BOTY judges that this boat was a standout among Midsize Cruisers," according to Cruising World.

"All in all, a good coastal cruising boat at a very reasonable price," Naranjo said.
