I grew up on Chicago’s south side, about two blocks away from Lake Michigan. As a kid in the summer, I was always at the beach near the water, or wanting to be on a boat.
I first sailed in my early twenties and was immediately hooked. The experience of trimming a jib for the first time - I felt the boat lean a bit and then quickly power forward - was incredible. I had no idea that sailing would feel that great, and that the trimmer had that much control over the way the boat moved.
The feeling of solace and tranquility attracted me to the sport and probably are the things that keep me there today. Except on race days - when we add camaraderie and teamwork to solace and tranquility.
I decided to switch careers a few years ago (nine to be exact)- after working for a large corporation for 14 years. I made a list of jobs I would like, and ‘sailboat dealership owner' was the only thing I had on the list… so I know I picked the right thing.
I still believe that sailing on Lake Michigan is the best way to spend a summer day.
